The soft sweetness of the sweet potato and its elegant fragrance blend elegantly in the mouth, lingering pleasantly on the palate - that is the charm of Kura Yaichi.
It's powerful when served on the rocks, gentle when mixed with water, and mellow when mixed with hot water.
No matter how you drink it, this is a special bottle that allows you to feel the earth of Tanegashima and the passion of the producers.
Made with 100% Tanegashima-grown purple sweet potato "Tanegashima Roman"
The star of Kura Yaichi is the rare purple sweet potato "Tanegashima Roman," which is carefully grown on Tanegashima Island.
This variety, registered by Kagoshima Prefecture in 1999, has reddish-purple skin and bright purple flesh.
The flesh is slightly sticky and has a good taste, making it ideal for making shochu.
It is cultivated on a small scale and is a rare variety known only to those in the know.
The characteristic sweet aroma of this purple sweet potato and its purple color, rich in anthocyanins, bring elegance and depth to shochu.
Tanegashima Roman, nurtured by Tanegashima's warm climate, sea breezes containing marine minerals, and rich soil, gives the shochu a unique character that cannot be found anywhere else.
The koji used is koshihikari rice, which is also grown on Tanegashima.
By insisting on using not only the sweet potatoes but also the rice koji from Tanegashima, we have created a truly "THE Tanegashima-made" shochu.
The shochu, made from the bounty of both sweet potatoes and rice grown on the land of Tanegashima, is truly the "Taste of Tanegashima."
Kura Yaichi uses black koji in its production.
Black koji is an important ingredient in making sweet potato shochu, as it creates a powerful richness and mellow flavor.
The gorgeous sweetness of the purple sweet potato and the deep umami of the black koji are in perfect harmony, creating a cup that becomes more delicious the more you drink it.
The company that outsources the production of Kura Yaichi is Hamada Shuzo Co., Ltd., a long-established shochu manufacturer founded in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji era).
Headquartered in Ichikikushikino City, Kagoshima Prefecture, the company produces unique shochu at three breweries based on the three principles of "tradition," "innovation," and "succession."
Their reliable techniques and traditions bring out the best in the ingredients from Tanegashima that Nishida Nosan has painstakingly cultivated, elevating them into the one-of-a-kind authentic shochu known as "Kura Yaichi."
Pour into a glass filled with ice to directly enjoy the powerful aroma of sweet potato and the distinctive sweetness of purple sweet potato.
You can also taste the deep richness that comes from the black koji, and enjoy the change in flavor slowly over time.
Diluting it with water gently releases the sweet potato's soft sweetness and aroma.
It pairs well with meals and is perfect for your daily evening drink.
It goes well with a wide range of dishes, from Japanese to Western cuisine.
When diluted with hot water, the sweet aroma of the purple sweet potato stands out even more, and the richness of the black koji is deepened.
Especially recommended during the cold season.
Enjoy a luxurious moment that will warm your body and soul.
Mix it with carbonated water for a light and fresh taste.
The sweet aroma of purple sweet potato and the fizzing sensation of the carbonation are pleasant, making it a perfect aperitif.
Q1. What is the origin of the name "Kurayaichi"?
A. The name "Kura Yaichi" embodies the idea that this is a one-of-a-kind shochu made from ingredients carefully grown in Nishida Nosan's brewery.
The bounty of the Tanegashima earth is condensed into a single drop, making this truly a product that "wishes for the prosperity of the brewery."
Q2. Is shochu easy to drink even for beginners?
A. Yes, Kura Yaichi is characterized by its soft, easy-to-drink taste, which reduces the distinctive flavor that is typical of sweet potato shochu.
The sweet aroma of purple sweet potato and the mellow richness of black koji are in perfect harmony, making this a great choice for those new to shochu.
If you start with water or carbonated water, it will be easier to drink and more enjoyable.
Q3. What kind of food would you recommend pairing it with?
A. It goes well with Japanese food in general, and is especially good with fish dishes, simmered dishes, and hot pot dishes.
In addition, the sweet aroma of purple sweet potato goes well with sweet and spicy dishes such as yakitori and braised pork.
You can enjoy a wide range of dishes.
Q4. Please tell me how to store it and what is the expiration date.
A. Avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures and humidity, and store at room temperature.

If you store it properly after opening, you can enjoy it while maintaining its flavor.

The history of Nishida Nosan Co., Ltd. began in 2003.
The founder, Haruki Nishida (current chairman), was running Nishida Kogyo Co., Ltd., a civil engineering and construction company in Tanegashima at the time.
However, faced with tough times, including a sharp decline in public works projects, the company decided to enter the agricultural industry as a means of survival.
"I want to pursue sustainable agriculture to increase Japan's food self-sufficiency rate" -- this desire of Chairman Nishida still lives on as Nishida Nosan's management philosophy.
Utilizing the technology and equipment cultivated in the civil engineering industry, Nishida Kogyo's employees and heavy machinery continue to support agriculture, such as by building stone storehouses using stacked boulders and developing farmland.
Currently, Nishida Nosan operates a farm with a total area of 105 hectares, of which 45 hectares are used to cultivate the high-quality Anno potato.
Nishida Nosan is known as a pioneer in the production of Annou sweet potatoes, which originated in Tanegashima.
The secret to their success lies in their thorough commitment to "soil preparation" and "aging."
Stone storehouse with a maximum capacity of 600 tons
The stone storehouse, built by piling up huge stones, can be said to be the symbol of Nishida Nosan.
The storage facility can hold up to 600 tons and is constantly maintained at a temperature of 13.5°C and humidity of 95.0%.
By storing the potatoes here for over 50 days, the starch slowly converts into sugar, resulting in an astonishing sweetness (over 16 degrees Brix).
This stone storehouse is truly a "treasure storehouse" that determines the deliciousness of Nishida Nosan's Anno potatoes.
Since its founding, Nishida Nosan has been cultivating sweet potatoes, which are used to make shochu.
Among them, I came across the rare purple sweet potato "Tanegashima Roman."
Fascinated by the unique sweet aroma of this variety and its ideal properties for shochu, Nishida Nosan commissioned the production to the prestigious Hamada Shuzo, founded in 1868, and completed their original shochu, Kura Yaichi.
This authentic shochu is "THE Tanegashima-made," made from Tanegashima purple sweet potato and Tanegashima koshihikari rice, all of which are born from the bounty of Tanegashima.
This is a product of Nishida Nosan's dedication to soil cultivation and passion for recycling-based agriculture.
The authentic shochu "Kurayaichi" black bottle is more than just shochu.
This is the bounty of Tanegashima's abundant nature.
Nishida Nosan's commitment and passion for soil cultivation.
The traditions and techniques of Hamada Sake Brewery.
And a vision for a future of circular agriculture.
All of this is condensed into one drop, making this a special bottle.
The moment you pour it into a glass, the sweet aroma of purple sweet potato gently spreads.
With just one sip, the deep richness of the black koji and the soft sweetness of the sweet potato blend in harmony in your mouth, and the pleasant aftertaste lingers - it is the very memory of the land of Tanegashima.
A great gift for someone special.
A toast for a special occasion.
Add color to your daily evening drinks.
The black bottle of "Kura Yaichi" will be an irreplaceable bottle that will accompany you during your precious moments.
