Recently, Kogako Shoten has collaborated with SORRY KOUBOU, a Hokkaido skincare brand, to develop a completely new botanical shampoo bar that makes use of Hokkaido's precious natural resources.

Yamada and Komatsu from SORRY KOUBOU

SORRY KOUBOU Co., Ltd.'s CEO Yamada-san (left) and development manager Komatsu-san (right) once again cooperated in the development and manufacturing of this new product. We photographed them in front of "COSOTTO HUT," a showroom in the forest that they run.

The two, who met in their university days, once suffered from severe atopic dermatitis. They overcame the condition by eliminating chemicals as much as possible and seeking healing through the power of nature. From this experience, they learned about cosmetics manufacturing and are committed to developing products that are handmade, from growing the herbs used as ingredients to manufacturing the finished products.

The soaps they make are completely non-irritating and leave your skin feeling moisturized after washing. You can immediately feel the difference from other soaps, and you'll be hooked to the point that you can't even count how many times you've bought them. The beeswax balm they released last year was also very well-received, so we consulted with them again this time and they readily agreed.

They are like innocent young girls.

She also has beautiful skin, which surprised me when I heard her age.

Both of them moved from Honshu 10 years ago and work hard every day, from growing herbs to making cosmetics.

● From the manufacturer SORRY KOUBOU: Our commitment to this soap

This shampoo bar is an exquisite blend of the "Mythical Japanese Mint JM-23" grown in Takinoue-cho, Hokkaido, on only one farm in the world, and "Todomatsu Essential Oil" from Shimokawa-cho, Hokkaido, which gives you a direct feel of the deep forest air.

The fragrance and effects created by these two rare ingredients are truly a gift from Hokkaido's great outdoors.

Although it is called a shampoo bar, it is of course formulated to be used on the entire body.

● The ultimate scalp care born from the hidden region of Hokkaido

It thoroughly cleanses away itchiness, dandruff, and clogged sebum, creating a healthier scalp environment the more you use it.

● A gentle, refreshing sensation emanating from Hokkaido's legendary Japanese mint

It contains more than twice the amount of menthol as Western mint, yet causes almost no irritation.

Refresh your mood with a sweet and clear scent.

● Take a deep breath with fir essential oil to feel like you're in the forest

The calming scent reminiscent of deep forest air will wake you up in the morning and relax you at night.

● Zero additives, eco-friendly and sustainable choice

Contains no synthetic surfactants, silicone, preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic colorings.

It has a simple formula that does not contain any chemicals that can cause skin problems, so it can be used safely by people of all ages and hair types.

Primeval fir forest in Shimokawa town

A primeval forest of Japanese Sakhalin fir in Shimokawa, Hokkaido.
This town in northern Hokkaido is rich in nature, with 90% of it covered by forest and a temperature difference of over 60 degrees between winter and summer.
It is the first town in Japan to obtain FSC Forest Management Certification (FM Certification).

In addition, the government is working with the private sector to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable region, including through the establishment of a "recycling-oriented forest management" system that will create a self-sufficient comprehensive forest industry that utilizes abundant forest resources, and through efforts such as self-sufficiency in renewable energy, primarily forest biomass.

● Development Story: Why is this shampoo bar special?

[The legendary Japanese mint JM-23, protected by the only farm in the world]

Takinoue Town, Hokkaido.

There is a farmer that is attracting the attention of fragrance manufacturers around the world.

The mythical Japanese mint "JM-23" is still cultivated by only one farm in the world.

This variety has been said to be the best of Hokkaido mint, which once accounted for 70% of the world market.

However, due to the difficulty of cultivation, it is currently only grown by one farmer in Takinoue Town.

This one farmer gave us permission to use their produce in this shampoo bar, and we were able to share some with them.

Peppermint is an essential oil that was originally used to relieve stiff shoulders, muscle pain, and joint pain, but it is also effective against itching, cracks, and chafed skin.

It has long been used as a scalp spray, especially for those with oily skin or when sweating in the summer makes the skin and scalp itchy.

The reason we chose the legendary Japanese mint "JM-23" is that it actually has the effect of soothing itching, and unlike foreign mints, it does not have the sharp irritation.

When you think about it, incorporating such rare essential oils into a shampoo bar was a decision that completely disregarded profitability, but the end result was a wonderful product that is unlike any other - it is gentle and non-irritating, yet leaves a lasting cooling sensation.

Mr. Fujimura, representative of Takinoue Town Japanese Peppermint Lab

Fujimura is the representative of Takinoue Town Japanese Peppermint Lab Co., Ltd. in Takinoue Town.
This time we visited the site in person and were shown around the Japanese mint fields and essential oil production site.

The legendary Japanese mint JM-23 is a variety that is grown only at one farm in the world, Farm Fujikawa.

Fujimura-san also showed me around there.

Incidentally, JM-23 is a variety that is very difficult to cultivate. Fujimura helps out with everything from cultivation to essential oil production every year.

Fujimura is originally from Tokyo.

I first encountered Takinoue Town on a camping tour when I was a child, and I could never forget the clear air I felt there, so I moved there from Tokyo over 20 years ago.

Now, with his skin tanned, he works hard every day as a Japanese peppermint farmer.

~ Amazing features of JM-23 ~

  1. 1. It contains more than twice the menthol content of Western mint
Compared to regular Western mint, it boasts an overwhelmingly high menthol content, yet has almost no irritating nasal sensation.

  2. ②A soft, sweet and clear fragrance
Despite its high concentration of menthol, the scent is surprisingly gentle, with a delicate and elegant aroma that is reminiscent of walking through a mint field covered in morning dew.

  3. 3. Delicate cultivation and rare harvests
JM-23 has very delicate leaves, so its cultivation requires skilled techniques and careful management.
Only a small amount of essential oil is obtained by distillation after harvesting, making it extremely rare.

  4. 4. It gently soothes itching without causing any irritation
Peppermint essential oil and its component menthol are often used in over-the-counter medicines, but the major feature of this variety is its ability to soothe itching with almost no irritation, and its gentle action on cracks and chapped skin, making it comfortable for anyone, regardless of age or gender, with dry or oily skin.

Another treasure grown in the virgin forests of Shimokawa, Hokkaido: Todomatsu essential oil(FSC forest certification)"

Shimokawa Town in Hokkaido is truly a "forest town," with forests covering approximately 90% of its total area.

The Sakhalin fir trees that grow here can withstand extreme cold of minus 30 degrees and take over 100 years to grow.

This essential oil, which contains concentrated life force, has been treasured by the Ainu people since ancient times as a ``blessing from Kamuy.''

In the Ainu language, the Japanese fir tree is called "Hup," and the most likely origin of this word is "swelling."

In Ainu daily life, this resin has been used as a medicine for chapped skin and as an adhesive.

There are also records of it being used to treat a wide range of symptoms, including respiratory problems such as colds, infected wounds, muscle pain, joint pain, and even periodontal disease.

This is because the components of essential oils have the effect of promoting blood circulation, which promotes circulation throughout the body.

The main ingredient, bornyl acetate, also has the effect of deepening relaxation and is suitable for aromatherapy before bedtime, so it is sometimes used in nighttime skin care.

Furthermore, it has antibacterial properties, making it ideal for those with breakouts or oily skin.

It is also suitable for those who are concerned about odor during the sweaty season, and for combating middle-aged oily odor and aging odor.

It is also rich in phytoncides, which have the effect of forest bathing, bringing deep relaxation and a sense of purity.

The essential oil extracted from the fir trees that grow in this lush forest gives off a refreshing and calming scent that is like a condensed version of the deep forest air itself.

Fupu no Mori CEO Mr. Tanabe and Director Mr. Kameyama

Mr. Tanabe (right), CEO of Fupunomori Co., Ltd., which handles everything from harvesting fir trees to developing essential oils and cosmetics, and Mr. Kameyama (left), director of the company.
They also operate the organic cosmetics brand NALUQ.

The raw material, Japanese Sakhalin fir leaves, are collected by the women themselves from the town-owned forest managed by Tanabe's husband, and then distilled.

It's a special scent that truly makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors.

As we spoke, I could sense Mr. Tanabe's love for Shimokawa Town and for the Japanese Sakhalin fir trees, and I felt his strength in turning even the tough work of dealing with nature into laughter and joy.

This time, the request came from my friend and fellow professional, SORRY KOUBOU, and he immediately agreed to use it.

~ The special power of Hokkaido fir essential oil ~

  1. ①A scent reminiscent of deep forests
The Sakhalin fir, a relative of the fir tree, is a representative tree of Japan's northern coniferous forests.
The essential oil creates a feeling of clean air that makes you want to take a deep breath.

  2. ② Health support that has been popular for a long time
The Ainu and other people of Hokkaido have long used the power of the Japanese Sakhalin fir to maintain health and for respiratory care.

  3. 3. The perfect balance between relaxation and alertness
The scent of Todomatsu has a unique balance of calming and refreshing aroma.

  4. 4. The blood circulation-promoting and antibacterial properties of nature have a synergistic effect
The ingredients contained in the essential oil of Todomatsu have blood circulation promoting and antibacterial properties, which help to balance the scalp and naturally lead to a healthy state.

● Commitment to the manufacturing method - Why we choose the traditional kettle-cooking method

In modern soap manufacturing, the "cold process method" that emphasizes efficiency is the mainstream.

However, we chose to use the traditional, time-consuming "kettle cooking method."

The kettle cooking method is a traditional Japanese technique that has been used since the Edo period.

Temperature control, stirring timing, and heat control.

Everything is left to the experience and intuition of the craftsman.

The kettle cooking method

~ The advantages of the kettle cooking method ~

  1. ①Safety due to complete saponification
The oils and fats are heated and slowly reacted with the alkali to completely saponify (turn into soap).
This means that no unreacted alkali remains that can irritate the skin, making it safe to use even on sensitive scalps.

  2. ②The ideal balance of cleansing and moisturizing power
The kettle cooking method produces natural glycerin, which remains in the soap.
This natural glycerin provides adequate moisture to the scalp and hair while maintaining cleansing power.

  3. 3. Optimal blend of essential oil ingredients
The heating process allows the precious Japanese mint and Sakhalin fir essential oils to be blended at the most effective time.

  4. 4. Unique quality that can only be achieved by hand
After production, the product is left to dry naturally for one month, which means that despite its small size, it lasts a very long time, and it also produces fine, firm lather that does not drip.

From molding to drying and packaging, everything is done by hand, and the craftsman's thoughts are put into each and every product.

[Care after using the shampoo bar]

Due to the characteristics of soap shampoo, hair becomes alkaline after washing.

If you have been using shampoo containing synthetic surfactants for a long time, you may be concerned about dry hair.

In that case, we recommend using a citric acid rinse after washing your hair.

● Easy! How to make citric acid rinse

Citric acid rinse is easy to make at home.

It restores hair to a slightly acidic state and smooths the cuticles.

~ Basic ingredients ~

  • Water: 500ml
  • Citric acid: 1 tablespoon (approximately 15g)
  • spray bottle

~ Arrangement ~

If you are concerned about dryness or would like to enjoy your favorite scent, try mixing the basic ingredients with the following.

*It will not interfere with the scent of the shampoo bar. It blends well with any essential oils.

*If your scalp is sensitive, we recommend using a basic citric acid rinse.

  • Glycerin: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (2.5 ml to 5 ml)
  • 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender, rosemary, etc.)

~ How to make ~

  1. Pour 500ml of water into a clean spray bottle
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of citric acid and mix well
  3. If you are concerned about dryness, add glycerin and essential oils (this is okay, but don't add them during sensitive periods!).
  4. Shake well and when completely dissolved, it's done

~ How to use ~

  1. After washing your hair with the shampoo bar, rinse thoroughly.
  2. Spray an appropriate amount of citric acid rinse onto wet hair.
*Be careful as it will sting if it gets in your eyes.
  3. Finally, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water

~ One-point advice ~

  • Adjust the amount of citric acid water depending on the length and volume of your hair.
  • If you have short hair or have successfully stopped shampooing, you can skip the citric acid rinse.
  • If you have a sensitive scalp, we recommend starting with a weaker concentration of citric acid.

● Frequently asked questions

Q1: I heard that soap shampoo makes your hair rough.

A: It's true that your hair may feel rough right after switching from synthetic shampoo.

This is a natural process that occurs as your hair returns to its natural state.

With continued use, your hair will regain its original healthy state and become less frizzy.

If you are concerned, we recommend using a citric acid rinse in combination.

Q2: Can it be used on sensitive skin?

A: We only use natural ingredients, and our kettle cooking method eliminates irritating ingredients as much as possible, so it can be used by people with sensitive skin.

However, this does not mean that everyone will not experience an allergic reaction, so we recommend that you perform a patch test before using it for the first time.

Also, if you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor before using this product.

Q3: Can it be used by children?

A: Yes, of course it can be used by children.

However, be careful not to get it in your eyes.

Also, if you feel that the cooling sensation of Japanese mint is too strong, adjust the amount you use.

Q4: How should I store it?

A: After use, place it in a well-drained soap dish and store it in a well-ventilated place.

If storing in the bathroom, choose a location that is not directly exposed to the shower.

● The founder's vision: A product born from the experience of living in Taiwan

When I was living in Taiwan, I suffered from serious scalp problems.

Itching, dandruff, hair loss, rough skin, back acne...I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis at a dermatologist and tried everything, including prescribed medications and shampoos that were effective on the scalp.

However, although there was a brief improvement, the condition quickly worsened, and ultimately no fundamental solution was found.

Maybe the climate doesn't suit my constitution...

Maybe it's just too much stress...

Changing my lifestyle didn't help at all, so after much trial and error I finally came across "hot water shampoo," a hair washing method that is completely free of chemicals.

The challenge of not using shampoo in Taiwan, where temperatures and humidity are high, was so tough that anyone with ordinary determination would have given up.

However, after six months, the symptoms finally improved.

Every time I share my experience, I get a huge response and learn that there are so many people out there who are suffering in the same way.

When I think back to the pain I felt at the time, I felt strongly that I could have resolved the issue in a more natural way.

So, with the help of SORRY KOUBOU and the power of plants produced in Hokkaido's rich natural environment, we began developing a shampoo bar that does not contain any chemical additives.

As we continued to use the prototype, we were able to accommodate our requests, including requests for more details and a texture like this.

They also worked hard to unearth rare ingredients, resulting in the creation of a soap with a wonderful scent and texture that far exceeded our imagination.

My own hair, which I usually wash with just hot water, has gradually changed since using this product.

The dirt in my pores was removed, my hair became thicker and more voluminous, and I no longer had to worry about the oxidized smell of excess sebum that would hit me in the evenings.

There must be many more people with the same problem.

We hope you will find the solution with this shampoo bar made with this wonderful, rare ingredient.

These are my thoughts as someone involved in the development of this product.
