A masterpiece that paves the way for the future of shochu, from a long-established company with over 100 years of history
"R5 Kawachi Genichiro" produced by Kawachi Genichiro Shoten is a premium limited edition shochu that was created with all its heart and soul by third-generation representative Yamamoto Masahiro, who inherited the last will of Kawachi Genichiro, known as the "God of Koji."
Due to its rarity and high quality, it is known as a phantom shochu that is never available on the market.
"R5 Kawachi Genichiro" won the Platinum Award in the sweet potato shochu category at the KURA MASTER, an international sake and shochu competition held in Paris, France, in 2023, and won both the Platinum Award in the sweet potato shochu category and the Jury's Award in 2024. This competition is rigorously judged by French sommeliers and barmen, and is highly regarded worldwide.
The name "R5 Kawachi Genichiro" comes from our founder, Genichiro Kawachi, who is known as the "father of modern shochu." The "Kawachi bacteria" he discovered dramatically improved the quality of shochu and established today's premium shochu culture.
It is said that the three premium shochu brands "Moriizo," "Maou," and "Murao," which are traded at high prices on the market, would not have been produced without the Kawachi bacteria. This shochu is a product filled with the techniques and traditions of Kawachi Genichiro Shoten, which continues to protect the source of the koji.
"R5 Kawachi Genichiro" is a special shochu that is not normally distributed.
Along with its rarity, it is characterized by its smooth mouthfeel and deep flavor, making it a must-try for all shochu fans.
"R5 Kawachi Genichiro" is a fusion of traditional Japanese koji and shochu-making techniques. It is a rare shochu that is difficult to obtain due to its limited production. Please experience this special cup of history and flavor for yourself.
Kawachi Genichiro Shoten is a long-established Kyushu store that supports Japan's fermentation culture.
There are only a handful of koji starter makers in Japan. Kawachi Genichiro Shoten is the only long-established koji starter maker in Kyushu that has been in business for over 100 years.
The founder, Genichiro Kawachi, is known as the "father of modern shochu" or the "god of koji" for discovering the "Kawachikin" koji mold, which dramatically improved the quality of shochu. The big three premium shochu brands, "Moriizo," "Maou," and "Murao," would not have been created without this Kawachikin.
Now, under the third generation's leadership, Kawachikin has evolved even further and is now used in approximately 80% of shochu production in Japan. This traditional technique and quality are still highly regarded today.
Since its founding, Kawachi Genichiro Shoten has continued to use carefully selected ingredients and traditional manufacturing methods. In particular, the company has established an indispensable presence in the shochu industry. The company also contributes to Japan's food culture by developing fermented foods such as miso and amazake, as well as health foods and livestock feed.
