Hello, this is Miko!
Today I would like to talk about the minerals contained in salt.
Well then, let's get started!
The role of minerals
The minerals contained in salt are one of the five major nutrients essential for human life, and since they cannot be produced in the body, they must be obtained from food.
There are many minerals on Earth, and 16 types of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, are essential for maintaining health.
The minerals play the following roles:
- Production of blood and bones, maintenance and regulation of bodily functions
- Regulation of intracellular salt concentration
- Maintaining a slightly alkaline state of blood
- Fatigue recovery, metabolism support
- Activating the brain and preventing aging
- Prevention of anemia
A deficiency in these minerals can lead to symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, headaches, and dehydration.
However, the mineral content of vegetables in recent years has decreased significantly compared to the past, due to the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and other factors.
Therefore, it is important to consume a balanced amount of minerals from your daily diet, but you should be particularly careful when choosing your salt.
Types of salt and how to choose them
There are various types of salt, including refined salt, regenerated processed salt, and natural salt, each with different mineral content and manufacturing methods.
One thing to pay particular attention to is the manufacturing method. There are traditional methods used in Japan, such as boiling seawater in a kettle, and using an ion exchange membrane method to extract only the sodium chloride, but the latter method removes minerals, so care must be taken when selecting salt rich in minerals.
To choose high-quality salt, it is important to check the place of production, raw materials, and manufacturing method.
For example, salt made using special methods, such as Yuki Shio (snow salt) and Ishigaki no Shio (stone wall salt), is rich in minerals and helps maintain health.
When choosing salt, keeping these points in mind and incorporating it into your daily diet can help prevent health problems caused by mineral deficiencies.
How to Choose Salt and Its Importance
Although it is difficult to distinguish different types of salt just by looking at their appearance or ingredients, there are some major differences between them, as follows:
Refined salt
This salt, known as "table salt" or "table salt," is made by electrolyzing seawater to extract only the "sodium chloride." It is widely used because it can be mass-produced and is inexpensive.
Regenerated processed salt
Salt that is made by adding bittern (seawater) to refined salt or imported salt and is advertised as containing minerals. It is a little more expensive than refined salt and does not have the same balance as nature.
Natural salt
Also known as "natural salt" or "natural salt," this salt is made by drying seawater in the sun or boiling it down in a cauldron. There is also rock salt and lake salt, and the amount of minerals contained varies.
This information may or may not be listed on the product packaging, so it's important to do your research before making a purchase.
When I buy salt, I pay attention to the place of production, the ingredients, and the manufacturing method. In particular, salt made with a particular manufacturing method will have detailed markings that indicate its quality.
Recommended salt
As the store manager, I particularly recommend Yuki Shio, which is rich in minerals, and Ishigaki Salt, which is dried slowly at low temperature for three days.

Yuki Shio is made using a new method in which underground seawater is taken through a coral layer and sprayed onto a heated iron plate to instantly turn it into powder. The salt made in this way contains a wealth of minerals that have accumulated over many years.
You may be skeptical of the idea that licking salt can make you feel better, but high-quality salt not only enhances the flavor of food, it also has a positive effect on your health. Instead of trying to reduce salt intake, why not choose high-quality salt and use it in your cooking?
