Good morning. It's miko!
It's getting warmer and warmer. The Somei-Yoshino cherry tree in front of my house is starting to bloom! This year, I've been enjoying cherry blossom viewing every day from my room🌸
Well, today I would like to write about chemical sensitivity.
Before we go on, although it is not a chemical substance, many people are suffering from a disease called hay fever, which did not exist in the past. Do you think there is a reason why our bodies have become so sensitive to pollen?
By the way, I have suffered from hay fever for many years, and with my allergies, I can't even tolerate using strong detergents.
However, this year, even when pollen season arrived, I didn't even sneeze!
So, let's go!
What is Chemical Sensitivity?
Chemical sensitivity is a disease concept caused by exposure to minute amounts of drugs or chemicals. However, in Asia, including Japan, it is still not fully recognized as a disease.
The history of chemical sensitivity began in the 1950s when it was proposed by American physician Theron G. Randolph. Later, in the 1980s, Mark Cullen proposed the concept of MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), and in Japan, Kitasato Institute Hospital has been conducting research into this condition under the name "chemical sensitivity."
It was only in 2009 that the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare finally added "chemical sensitivity" to its list of diseases, and it became possible to include it in medical records and in detailed descriptions. This shows how short the history of this disease is. Therefore, there are still many skeptical voices. Some experts believe that modern diseases are caused by exposure to chemicals, but in the absence of objective evidence, some say that it is due to smells or preconceived notions.
Dangers of Chemical Substances Hiding Nearby
It is said that there are more than 50,000 kinds of harmful chemicals in our daily lives. In Japan, tens of thousands of cases of poisoning occur every year, with 600,000 cases and 6,000 deaths annually.
Many of these health problems are serious, caused by everyday items such as skin disorders, accidental ingestion by children, and inhalation accidents.
Risk Factors for Chemical Sensitivity
It is said that people who are prone to chemical sensitivity are more likely to live in environments where they have a lot of contact with the substance. There are also people who are under stress and have a weakened immune system, and some people say that it is related to their constitution or genetics.
This disease does not develop suddenly. Like delayed-type allergies, chemicals accumulate in the body little by little, like water accumulating in a bucket, and when the tolerance is exceeded, chemical sensitivity occurs. It is said that people who have many opportunities to come into contact with chemicals on a daily basis are particularly susceptible to developing this disease. As mentioned in an article the other day, the microcapsules contained in fabric softeners are one example.
With continued daily use, small children and pets are the first to develop symptoms. Also, as soon as people move into a newly built house, they start to experience abnormal symptoms (headaches, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, etc.), which is also known as sick house syndrome. Opportunities to come into contact with chemicals are increasing everywhere, and even if you are careful, situations that are unavoidable are becoming a problem.
How to live with chemicals
Chemical sensitivity can be considered a modern disease. How can we live with it?
① Avoid chemicals as much as possible
The best thing to do is to avoid contact with substances that may be harmful as much as possible. You should also be careful about the detergents you use, the adhesives used on your furniture, and the chemical seasonings in your food. However, you will also need the understanding of those around you to do this.
I don't use any liquid detergents. Instead of detergent, I use 618 Scallop Powder, and for alkaline stains, I use citric acid water. I don't use shampoo, but I wash my body and hair with the Cotton Flower Series Body Mitt. For my face, I use honey soap that is carefully made with natural ingredients.
② Excrete from the body
It is almost impossible to live a life completely free of chemicals in this day and age. Make an effort to exercise moderately every day, sweat, and increase your metabolism. To detoxify with food, it is a good idea to consume Yaeyama chlorella, roasted black rice tea, and roasted black pickled plums.
3) Build up physical strength to withstand substances
It has been suggested that the onset of chemical sensitivity is related to an imbalance in the intestinal environment. Therefore, by improving your intestinal environment and strengthening your immune system, you will be able to withstand chemicals. To improve your intestinal environment, I make a conscious effort to eat pickled rice bran, which is rich in natural lactic acid bacteria, fermented foods, and seaweed, which is rich in soluble dietary fiber.
④ Reduce body fat
Chemical substances accumulate in fat. Therefore, if you have a lot of excess fat, it can be said that chemical substances are also more likely to accumulate in the body. Therefore, it is effective to reduce body fat, especially visceral fat around the waist and lower abdomen. Yaeyama Chlorella has been reported to have the ability to absorb and excrete chemical substances. Of course, Yaeyama Chlorella does not reduce fat, so you should excrete the chemical substances that have accumulated in your body while reducing body fat through dieting.
summary
As society becomes more convenient, the number of people suffering from chemicals and pharmaceuticals is increasing, and this will become a global issue in the future.
Chemical sensitivity is not currently recognized as a disease because the number of people who develop it is still low. Until the number of people who develop it increases and it becomes a social problem, it will likely be left unattended, with corporate profits taking priority.
Therefore, I think it is important for us to live a life that relies more on the power of nature, to cherish the social environment that our ancestors already had, and to be grateful for the cleansing and immune powers that humans are born with, while passing on to the next generation what health is.
